1805 : All Michigan Males 16 and Over Assessed $1 Capitation Tax

On Sept. 10, 1805, Michigan territorial law directed that “every male inhabitant in the territory over the age of 16 years should pay annually the sum of $1 as a capitation tax.” The total number of taxpayers in the territory at the time was 525 and all paid.
