On January 13, 1854, Jim Paul registered a plat of land that would become Ontonagon.

Paul was the first white man to settle in that region of the Upper Peninsula. He was after prosperity in the form of copper, but riches passed him by. He failed to get the title to the land for Ontonagon registered properly in his name.
