On June 3, 1921, the main Detroit Public Library at Woodward and Kirby was dedicated. The property was acquired in 1912, and the noted New York architect, Cass Gilbert, was selected to design the new main library. Construction began in January 1915. Due to lack of funds, construction delays and World War I, the library took more than six years to complete. The early Italian Renaissance-style building of three floors housed eight reference departments and 439,000 books.
