1939 : Governor Frank Fitzgerald, Michigan’s First and Only Governor to Die In Office

On this day Governor Frank D. Fitzgerald died soon after starting his second term and was succeeded by Luren D. Dickinson. Fitzgerald is the only governor to have died while still in office. He is also only one of two governors who were elected to two non-consecutive terms.
