Thunder Bay lies off the coast of Alpena, Mich., in Lake Huron. Mariners have long been able to find shelter from high winds and heavy storms in the bay. However, strong and unexpected storms have also caused many shipwrecks within the bay itself. Thunder Bay Island also contributed to the areas high number of wrecks. When vessels tried to navigate Lake Huron’s sudden storms and thick fog, they often failed to clear the island. After more than its share of shipwrecks, the area earned the nickname “Shipwreck Alley.” More than 100 wrecks have been discovered in the area. And, it is possible, even likely, that many more wrecks remain undiscovered. This historic treasure-trove is frequented by many interested divers and researchers. Recently, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the state of Michigan reached an agreement on the management and protection of this important area.
