1821 : First Public Executions in Michigan

Two Indians, accused of murder, were hung in Detroit on this day in 1821, the first executions in Michigan after the territory became part of the U.S. In jail, the two men used a piece of leather to make a drum, which they used to perfrom a death dance the night before and the morning of their executions. Michigan would eventually outlaw capital punishment in 1846.
