1852 : Marquette Iron Company Makes First Iron Ore Shipment to Eastern Smelters

On July 7, 1852, the Marquette Iron Company shipped six barrels of iron ore down the Great Lakes to New Castle, PA. The Upper-Peninsula ore was the first to reach the Lake Erie smelters via the Great Lakes.
