1863 : Troy Township Approves Tax to Fund Bonuses for Military Volunteers

On December 28, 1863, the voters of Troy Township approved a tax to compensate soldiers. The tax paid $100 to each man who volunteered to join the Union military. According to the report from Michigan History, the bounty was one of many proposed and approved by voters in local and state elections to encourage enlistment.
