On December 6, 1865,  the 13th Amendment to the Constitution ending slavery was ratified. Michigan’s Senator Jacob M. Howard is credited with working closely with Abraham Lincoln in drafting and passing the Thirteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution, which abolished slavery. In the Senate, he also served on the Joint Committee on Reconstruction which drafted the Fourteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution.  He was also instrumental in drafting and passing the Fifteenth Amendment
