1868 : Harvey Firestone Born

December 20, 2018 all-day

On December 20, 1868 Harvey Samuel Firestone was born. Later in life he would start the Firestone Tire and Rubber Company. His fortune was assured when Henry Ford chose his company to supply tires for his Model T in 1906. Together, Harvey Firestone, Henry Ford, and Thomas Edison formed a famous millionaire club.

Firestone was responsible for a number of industry innovations, including the production of pneumatic tires, nonskid tire treads, low-pressure balloon tires, and farm tractor tires.

Avid campers, Harvey Firestone and Henry Ford would also help publicize a Huron Mountain Club, a recreational retreat northwest of Marquette.

In 1895, Mr. Firestone married the former Idabelle Smith of Jackson, Michigan. They had five sons and one daughter. The founder lived to see his sons carrying on the business and traditions he started. In tribute to Mr. Firestone’s memory his sons, in 1985, completed the relocation of his boyhood home and farm buildings from Ohio to Greenfield Village in Dearborn, Michigan, where more than one million visitors annually visit the workings of a 19th century farm at “Firestone Farmstead”.
