1881 : Initial Meeting Held to Form Detroit Institute of Arts

On December 6, 1882, an initial meeting that organized the Detroit Institute of Arts was held.

Detroit Evening News founder James Scripps and advertising manager William Brearley led the charge for opening an art museum in Detroit, and a year later the first exhibit opened.
