1917 : Detroit Suffering From Coal Shortages

Detroit News Headlines on Page One state that “Solid Trains of Coal Speeding to Detroit As City Burns its Last” (December 15, 1917).

Due to icy winter weather, the lives of babies and invalids are in danger. According to police headquarters, 3,516 families are totally without coal. Federal fuel officials are doing their best to solve the crisis. In Highland Park, residents have resorted to demolishing small frame buildings for firewood. Other residents have threatened to cut down shade trees for fuel.
