1920 : First Live News Broadcast in Detroit

August 31, 2022 all-day

The first ever live news broadcast, the reading of local election results, was made on August 31, 1920 from 8MK in Detroit. The station, then owned and operated by The Detroit News, had only been broadcasting music programs for one week, albeit to a very small audience. The Detroit News went on years later to launch Michigan’s first television station. Little 8MK is still on the air as WWJ.
