1958: Mackinac Bridge Officially Dedicated

June 28, 2018 all-day
On June 28, 1958, the Mackinac Bridge was officially dedicated by Gov. G. Mennen “Soapy” Williams, Bridge Authority Chair Prentis Brown and their wives. They stood at the North Anchor block and tied together a five-mile ribbon stretching from both ends of the world’s longest suspension bridge.
Roughly 800 persons crowded onto the Mackinac Bridge underneath blue skies and a warm sun. Overhead, teams of Army and Navy jets made continual passes in formation.

“We of Michigan today give this bridge to America,” Williams said.
