1978 : 18 Year Old Michiganders Lose Right to Drink Alcohol

On December 23, 1978, a law took effect that, after nearly seven years at 18, returned Michigan’s legal drinking age to 21. That November, Michigan voters had approved a constitutional amendment to make the change. During the seven years that the drinking age was 18, alcohol-related automobile accidents involving teenaged drinkers had increased and so had the use of alcohol by high school students.
