2000 : Michigan Municipal League Attempts To Preserve Local Authority

On July 10, 2000, the Michigan Municipal League turned in 467,179 signatures to the Secretary of State’s Bureau of Elections supporting an initiative designed to make it harder for the state’s legislature to pre-empt local authority.
The effort, Let Local Votes Count, would require the legislature to muster a two-thirds majority to pass any bill that intervenes or increases the scope of state government intervention in municipal government, property or concerns.The proposal which went to the ballot that fall, was trounced with 67 percent of voters gave it the thumbs down.
