On November 15, 2012, Miguel Cabrera was voted the American League’s most valuable player, joining former Detroit Tigers Mickey Cochrane (1934), Hank Greenberg (1935, 1940), Charlie Gehringer (1937), Hal Newhouser (1944, 1945), Denny McLain (1968), Willie Hernandez (1984) and Justin Verlander (2011) in this distinction.

Cabrera had a fabulous season and became baseball’s first Triple Crown winner since Carl Yastrzemski accomplished the feat in 1967. He hit .330 with 44 home runs and 139 RBIs after making the switch from first base to third base following the offseason signing of first baseman Prince Fielder.

Cabrera’s .606 slugging percentage and .999 OPS led the American League as well.
