2015 : Michigan Records First December Tornado

The National Weather Service in White Lake, MI has confirmed that an EF-1 tornado touched down in Canton, MI yesterday, December 23, 2015.

Looking at the historical tornado database from the Storm Prediction Center, this will be Michigan’s first December tornado since records began in 1950.

There have been nine November tornadoes in Michigan since 1950. No tornadoes have struck in January. One tornado has occurred in February, touching down February 28, 1974 southeast of Ypsilanti.

The tornado had a peak wind of 90 mph. It had a path length of 2 miles, and a maximum width of 300 feet.

The tornado lasted approximately three minutes, from 6:43 p.m. to 6:46 p.m. December 23, 2015.

The tornado was enabled by record warm temperatures that arrived with a weather front.
