The University of Detroit Mercy unveiled a new logo and brand Thursday morning as part of an effort to better reflect who they are, university leaders said.
The new logo features a large red D, with a blue M tucked in it. The M plays off the familiar Old English D of the Detroit Tigers, a symbol of Detroit for many outside of the state. It was important for the university to be tied to Detroit, its leaders said.
The new logo replaces a logo that was a simple sign-like treatment of the university’s name. The new logo has more of a college feel and less of a corporate feel, said Detroit Mercy President Antoine Garibaldi. The old logo had been around since 1990, when the University of Detroit and Mercy College of Detroit combined into one institution.
Detroit Mercy also is replacing its tagline of “We want great things for you” with “Build a Boundless Future.”
“It’s much more aspirational,” Garibaldi said.
Work on the project began four years ago and included surveys of various groups connected to the university.
