On Nov. 14, 1828, the British surrendered their last post in Michigan after the War of 1812.

The last post was on Drummond Island, once a critical region for trade and military dominance. They moved there after signing a treaty on Mackinac Island, arguing it was Canadian territory. A survey determined that was not so.
