On September 16, 1972, Dennis Franklin started as quarterback for the University of Michigan football team in their season-opening 7-0 victory over Northwestern.

Franklin, the first black quarterback in University of Michigan history, started regularly for the next three seasons, then played one year for the Detroit Lions.
