1974 : Coleman Young Becomes Detroit’s First Black Mayor

On this day Coleman Young officially became Detroit’s First Black Mayor. He would go on to serve as mayor for 20 years.

According to Michigan Every Day, not wanting to be occupied on January 1, Mayor Coleman Young was sworn in as Detroit’s first Black Mayor on December 28, 1973.
