On September 22, 1989, a young woman in a Yugo — on her way to visit her boyfriend in the Upper Peninsula — was blown off the Mackinac Bridge and died. Today, the Mackinac Bridge Authority offers assistance on blustery days, sending a full size truck alongside cars to serve as a windbreak.
