2018 : Richard Spencer Holds White Nationalist Speech at Michigan State

March 4, 2022 all-day

Violent clashes erupted Monday when Richard Spencer, a leading figure in the white nationalist movement, visited Michigan State University to deliver a speech.

Spencer, who is the president of the white nationalist organization The National Policy Institute, popularized the term “alt-right” and believes in views such as anti-immigration, white nationalism and anti-Semitism.

To avoid a Free Speech lawsuit, the University allowed Spencer to rent the Pavilion for Agriculture and Livestock Education at the south end of campus during Spring Break to minimize disruption to no avail.

Fights broke out as some protesters hurled bottles, rocks and horse manure to block Spencer’s supporters from entering the Pavilion for Agriculture and Livestock Education, a venue near the southern tip of campus where Monday’s event was held. Punches were thrown as members of the two groups hurled insults at one another.
