2002 : Detroit Red Wings Win Stanley Cup and Coach Scotty Bowman Retires

On June 13, 2002, the Detroit Red Wings won their third Stanley Cup in six years, finishing off the Carolina Hurricanes 3-1 at the Joe Louis Arena to win the Finals in five games. Coach Scotty Bowman announced his retirement after the game, having won a record ninth Stanley Cup.
